about

In 2021, it is believed that 107,375 people died in this country from drug overdose. That's a hard way to go. I don't know how to explain exactly what I mean by the title The Lost Ones. I'm certainly not judging. We are all only lost until we are found, and I am speaking from a seat in that circle, as someone who is grateful to be here, free and breathing still, among the lucky ones who found a way through the door. This is my lullaby to fallen friends and every word is true.

lyrics

the lost ones.

the lost ones are the ones I love
the ones I love most of all
the tender-hearted, broken-hearted
trying to go home

The screw-ups and the ne’er do wells
the drunks and the oh so sleepy
junkies nodding on the bench on a bright and sunny day

You find them on the bathroom floor
lights out, long gone
you find them in your neighborhood bar
with black eyes and teeth knocked out

But I love, I love them anyway
They’re the sweetest ones in a sad old way

The lost ones always die at night
late at night after you wave goodbye
when you stop they go on and on
and on and on till they’re gone

A lost one told me once she said
she’d never get to heaven now
she felt so bad, tried so hard, but never got it right
and I said god wouldn’t make you go through that
alone down in hell somewhere
in heaven you’d be sitting right there, probably even have your own chair

Yeah, I love, love them oh so much
the sweetest ones and god smiles on them

See you somewhere in my dreams
you’re happy, you’re happy and free
see you up there
high in the clouds

Hard to imagine I know.
see you up there in my dreams.
